Martin Edwards, fellow pub historian, has identifed a long-lost beerhouse on the corner of East End Road and London Road which was called the Mazeppa. This is the site of the present petrol station. Only one reference in 1844 when the landlord was John Mountjoy. There was another Mazeppa beerhouse in Tewkesbury Road at this time.

Mazeppa is a narrative poem by Lord Byron written in 1819, based on a popular legend of the time about the early life of Ivan Mazepa (1639-1709) who became the military leader of Ukraine.
